Lured by the writings of Gottfried Duden, in 1833 German immigrants came
and resettled in harmony amidst the earlier pioneers. In the more than 150 years
since its founding, Washington's historic minded citizens built a diverse collection of
churches, businesses,
schools and social and service organizations.
It is a city proud to bear the name of the "Father of Our Country."
The
Washington Town & Country Fair,
held annually during the first week in August, is the premier showcase of the community's
cooperation, entertainment and enjoyment.

Washington Area Chamber
of Commerce provides active leadership in promoting civic, industrial and
commercial advancement of the community. Located in Franklin County, Washington
is the largest shopping area between Jefferson City and St. Louis.
